About Ozlem

I’m Ozlem, a MACA Registered Counsellor and Couples Therapist in Melbourne, with more than a decade of experience supporting young people, adults and couples across a range of mental health, relationship and wellbeing concerns. My professional journey has included counselling, community and wellbeing work, professional and volunteer experiences, as well as lived experiences across different countries. Along the way, I have developed thousands of hours of counselling experience and a deep appreciation for the many different circumstances that shape how we think, feel, behave and relate to others.I support clients experiencing anxiety, stress and burnout, low self-esteem and confidence, relationship difficulties, parenting challenges, career changes, life transitions and periods of feeling stuck or uncertain. I also work with couples who are experiencing relationship challenges and want to better understand their patterns of communication, connection and conflict. My approach to counselling is warm, collaborative, practical and trauma-informed. I don’t believe there is a one-size-fits-all approach to therapy. Instead, I work with you to understand what you need and what approach feels most helpful. Our sessions may involve deeper reflection and exploration, alongside practical strategies that can help you make sense of your experiences, feel more in control and move forward with greater clarity and confidence.MY APPROACH
I have always been fascinated by the human mind and by what shapes the way we think, feel, behave and connect with one another. This curiosity continues to influence both my professional development and the way I work with clients.I believe therapy works best when you can feel comfortable being yourself, speak openly and know that you are genuinely heard and understood. My role is not to judge or tell you how you should live your life. Instead, I see myself as someone in your corner — listening without judgement, offering thoughtful reflections and different perspectives, and introducing practical strategies when they may be useful.Together, we can explore what is happening beneath the surface, understand patterns in your thoughts, feelings, behaviours and relationships, and consider what may help you move forward in a way that feels right for you.I also speak Turkish fluently and can provide counselling in either Turkish or English. For people looking for a Turkish-speaking therapist in Melbourne, being able to communicate in the language that feels most natural to you can be an important part of feeling understood and comfortable in therapy.Ongoing Professional Development
I highly value ongoing learning, professional development and reflective practice. I regularly engage in professional supervision and continuing professional development, allowing me to remain current in my practice, reflect on my work and continue developing as a therapist.I see learning as an ongoing part of being a good counsellor. The more I learn and reflect, the better equipped I am to meet each client as an individual and provide thoughtful, responsive and ethical support.WHY I DO THIS WORK
I genuinely enjoy the work I do and feel privileged to support people through the process of understanding themselves more deeply. One of the aspects I value most about counselling is helping people connect the dots between their experiences, emotions, relationships and patterns of behaviour. Sometimes, things that have felt confusing or overwhelming for a long time can begin to make more sense when there is space to slow down and explore them. For me, therapy is about creating a safe and supportive space where you can pause, reflect and develop a clearer understanding of yourself and what is happening in your life. From this deeper awareness, we can begin to explore different ways of thinking, relating and responding, creating the possibility for meaningful and lasting change.WORKING WITH ME
If you’re considering counselling, you may not have a clear idea of exactly what you need yet and that’s okay. You might be experiencing anxiety or stress, struggling in a relationship, feeling overwhelmed by parenting or work, going through a major life change, or simply feeling stuck and unsure about what needs to change.I work collaboratively with clients, meeting you where you are and helping you develop greater self-awareness, understand your patterns and explore what you would like to change.Finding the right therapist is an important part of the counselling process. I encourage you to reach out by phone or email so we can have a conversation about what you’re looking for and whether I might be the right fit for you.WHY THE GIRAFFE
You may have noticed the giraffe in my logo. It holds a special meaning for me and is inspired by Nonviolent Communication (NVC), a training I completed many years ago based on the work of Marshall Rosenberg. In NVC, the giraffe is often used as a symbol of compassion and connection. As the land animal with the largest heart, the giraffe represents something I deeply value in my work: the importance of leading with the heart. In counselling, I believe genuine connection, compassion and a willingness to truly understand the person sitting across from us are at the heart of meaningful therapeutic work.Every person brings their own experiences, stories, struggles, hopes and ways of making sense of the world into the therapy room. For me, the giraffe is a reminder to meet each person with curiosity, compassion, openness and respect, creating a space where you can feel heard, understood and accepted without judgement. The giraffe represents the kind of therapeutic relationship I strive to create — one grounded in compassion, connection, understanding and humanity.WHO I SUPPORT
